History
The Applied Foreign Languages degree (LEA), created in France, shapes professionals qualified to work in areas involving the presence of several languages. Depending on the university where the course is taught, the fields of application vary.
In Brazil, there are currently four LEA options at the undergraduate level. The one offered by the State University of Santa Cruz (UESC) is the pioneer in the country and in Latin America. At both UESC and the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), the course is directed to International Negotiations. LEA-MSI, at the University of Brasilia (UnB), on the other hand, is focused on the use of languages and technologies in multilingual environments and the information society.
The Bachelor's Degree in Foreign Languages Applied to Multilingualism and the Information Society was created in 2010 within the Reuni Program - Restructuring and Expansion of Federal Universities. In 2016, the course was approved by MEC.
Currently focused on offering three complete language curricula - English, Spanish, and French -, LEA-MSI also offers, with the support of the Department of Foreign Languages and Translation, the possibility of studying other languages, such as German, Italian, Polish, Japanese, or Korean. Specific subjects of application are related to topics such as the strengthening or inclusion of new languages in the digital world, terminology, translation and audiovisual accessibility, organization of international conferences, linguistic censuses, and elaboration of dictionaries.
